Abstract
Objectives To determine the bacteriological profile and to evaluate the antimicrobial susceptibility pattern of organisms isolated from neonatal septicemia to initiate early effective antibiotic therapy and to detect the ESBL producer in predominant Gram Negative isolate Klebsiella pneumoniae. Methods This is a cross sectional study of 100 babies suspected of neonatal sepsis based on clinical diagnosis. After isolating and identifying the organisms from blood culture antimicrobial susceptibility was done as per CLSI guidelines. Among the Gram negative bacilli ESBL producing Klebsiella pneumoniae were identified. Results culture positivity was 46, out of which GPC constitute 60.87 where as GNB constitute 39.13. Among the predominant Gram negative bacterial isolates 46 were ESBL producers. Conclusion This study revealed blood cultures are mandatory in all neonatal septic cases for seeking specific sensitivity patterns and accordingly modifying the antibiotic therapy
