Abstract
On July 27, 2014, Tatiana Bagishevna Nikitina, Dr habil. (History), Deputy Director of the Mari Research Institute of Language, Literature and History named after V.M. Vasilyev, a renowned expert on medieval archaeology of the Finno-Ugric peoples, celebrates her birth anniversary. Since her student years, the principal area of T.B. Nikitina's research interests has been, and remains, the archeology and medieval history of the Mari people. She has studied burial rites of the 16-17th-century Maris, and subsequently switched to the theme of the Maris ancient ethnic history. In 1993, the Research center for Finno-Ugric studies with the Mari Research Institute was established, and the publication of the "Finno-ugrovedeniye" (Finno-Ugric Studies) scientific journal organized with her immediate participation. Currently, T. B. Nikitina continues field studies of Mari burial ground and settlement sites. She has authored 7 monographs and over 100 articles. Based on the works by T.B. Nikitina dated by last quarter of the 20th – early 21st century, the modern theory of cultural and ethnic development of the Mari people in the Middle Ages has been established.
