Abstract

Since 1970, the subject of music began to have presence in the secondary education curriculum but acquired a more defined profile with L.O.G.S.E. (1990). Since then it has been the object of debates and changes in the following educational reforms. This article provides a brief overview of the state of the subject according to the L.O.E. and legislative framework of L.O.M.C.E. The purpose of this study is to know the views of students in the 3rd year of E.S.O. on various aspects related to the subject of music. The method of the study was to survey 83 students from two schools in the Community of Madrid, which was carried out during in May 2015. 29 survey questions were formulated so that students felt like designers of the same survey and expressed their choice freely in several aspects: curricular position, schedules, activities, methodology, evaluation, teaching and learning resources. The results reveal that most students viewed the subject as unimportant or less serious. They chose to have it as an optional subject and that their grades would not affect the average academic record. The respondents believed that the assessment should take more account of the attitude and participation than the knowledge qualities acquired. In relation to the music teacher the prevailing opinion was that it was more important for the teacher to be fun than his competence and professionalism in this area. Regarding the teaching-learning process, respondents suggested playful classes based on listening to music, preferably modern, and playing classroom instruments in a group.
