Corrosive Stricture esophagus stomach-our experience

Abstract
AIMSOBJECTIVES- To study about the corrosive strictures of oesophagus, stomach or both and the surgical procedures followed in management of corrosive strictures.METHODSMATERIALS - Retrospective study of 5 years from 2005 to 2010.All patients with the diagnosis of corrosive strictures of Esophagus, stomach, or both, who underwent surgical interventions were included in the study.RESULTS- Total of 40 cases were included in the study and distribution of cases was slightly in favour of females, majority of strictures were due to acid poisoning(approx.75), oesophagus was most common site of stricture, most common complication was aspiration , finally most common procedures performed for these patients were either a gastric pullup or coloplasty.CONCLUSION-Critical assessment of extent, severity of stricture, type of acute phase intervention nutritional status determines the surgical management and its outcome-Surgical intervention should be done at the right time on the selected patients, procedures being tailored individually.
