Abstract
The article deals with the process of D. Yavornytsky's development as a scholar during his studies and preparation for a Master's examination at the Faculty of History and Philology of Kharkov University. The humanities' intellectual community at Kharkov University is considered as a model of the «scientific field» in Pierre Bourdieu's sense, the structure of which determined Yavornytsky's choice of strategies for entering the scholarly community and establishing a scholarly career based on a particular vision of his own contribution to scholarship.
