Abstract

Research of The refining of the coconut oil from smoke copra with The Activated Charcoal And Bentonite Absorbents was conducted. The objective of this study is to analyse how effective the activated charcoal and bentonite absorbents at various concentration to the quality of coconut oil from processing of smoke copra. The material used was coconut oil provided by one of the small coconut oil industries with the smoke copra processing in Kabupaten Minahasa Utara Propinsi Sulawesi Utara and the activated charcoal from a local producer of PT Mapalus Makawanua Bitung, whereas bentonite was imported from Bogor, West Java. This research has been carried out through an experiment applying the complete random design and repeated three times, activated charcoal and bentonite absorbent with 1%, 2%, 3% concentration. The determination quality variables of the coconut oil in this research are color, moisture, content, free fatty acid content, peroxide value content, and impurities content. The experiment results show that the absorbing percentage of the red color by activated charcoal absorbent is around 59,23%-88,90% and by bentonite between 66,70%-100%, the absorbing percentage of the yellow color by activated charcoal is 47,40%-72,10% and by bentonite 48,27%-97,40%. The coconut oli moisture content is around 0,19%-0,143%, the free fatty acid content is 1,15%-1,0%, peroxide value content is 4,06-1,73 mg.eq/kg, and the impurities content is 0,10%-0,027% The implementation of activated charcoal and bentonite absorbent with 3% concentration gives the best result to the efforts of increasing the quality of the coconut oil the parameters of the color, of the peroxide value and of the impurities content.
