Abstract
The EU guidelines regulating the Biotechnology sector have been framed while giving due consideration to social and environmental factors. It is for this reason that the EU's biotechnology regulation system has earned it the epithet of ‘Global Precautionary Superpower'. Consideration for the ideals of environmental democracy has played a major role in shaping EU's approach. This article will analyse the European regulatory structures, and contrast it with the ‘purely rational approach' that is followed in the United States.
