Abstract

The findings from Southern Bulgaria, mainly dated back to the 8th century, which researchers associate with proto-Bulgarian presence in the territory south of Stara Planina, are discussed. These are primarily funerary complexes of the 1st half through to the mid-8th century, among which of particular interest are the details of belts (buckles and appliqués). The findings of grey-clay polished pottery, common in the area between Nova Zagora, Sliven, Karnobat, Pomorye, Debeltum and Khaskovo are also analyzed. According to the author, the presence of this pottery can hardly be considered proof of mass presence of the proto-Bulgarian population in the territory of Southern Bulgaria in the eighth century. As to the burials of this period, they are not numerous, and their funeral goods cannot serve as a reliable ethnic indicator. Consequently, there is no reason to suggest the presence of proto-Bulgarian administration and proto-Bulgarian aristocracy in Southern Bulgaria in the first half of the 8th century.
