Abstract
Traditional or alternative medicine refers to other than orthodox medicine. The plant Butea monosperma (Lam.) Kuntze belongs to the family Fabaceae. Different phytochemical constituents present are carbohydrates, alkaloids, tannins, flavonoids, steroids and terpenoids. Butea monosperma is traditionally used as an antioxidant, antistress, behavior stimulant, antigout, antileprotic, anti-inflammatory, antiulcer, astringent and antihepatotoxic. Its flower is used to treat cases of enlarged spleen, menstrual disturbances, burning sensations and eye diseases. Spectral analysis data confirms the presence of terpenoid - Lupeol. Both the methanol extract and isolated bioactive compound lupeol possesses significant antioxidant potential (92 μg/mL, 107 μg/mL and 35 μg/mL, 34 μg/mL when assay done by H 2 O 2 and DPPH methods, respectively.
