Abstract
The article considers the history of public discussions of the issues of preservation of historical and archaeological monuments which unfolded in early 1920s concerning Bolgar fortified settlement. After the end of the civil war, general public and the scientific community of the Tatar Republic paid focused attention to condition of historical, archaeological and cultural monuments of Bolgar. The issues of studying and preservation of these monuments became a subject of debate and discussion on the pages of local periodicals. The media not only discussed general issues, but also advanced specific proposals on the preservation and repair of historical and archaeological treasures of Bolgar, on obtaining funds for a thorough restoration of the monuments, etc.
