Abstract
Block matching motion estimation is the essence of video coding systems. This paper is a survey of the existing block matching algorithms used for motion estimation in video coding. The algorithms that are surveyed in this paper are widely accepted by the video coding community and have been used in implementing various standards, ranging from MPEG1/H.261 to MPEG10/H.264. The aim of this review is to provide the succeeding researchers with some constructive information in design of the fast motion estimation (ME) algorithms.
