The Icon Appeared in Kazan and Its “Vatican” Replica

Abstract
The article focuses on history and iconography of the icon with Theotokos appeared in the city of Kazan in 1579. Iconographical aspects are analyzed in the context of Ancient Russian and Western European art traditions. The attribution of Kazan icon venerated in the church of Saints Theodore, David and Constantine on Arskoe cemetery in Kazan is given. Another venerated icon, so called “vatican” replica, venerated now in Kazan convent in the city of Kazan is also studied. This icon was repatriated to Russia from abroad in 2004. It was the important event in Russian religious and cultural life.
