Abstract
At present, interest remains in the key issues of Russian history. For a long time, the question of the role of the church in the Russian state remains very relevant. While in the period of the Tatar-Mongol yoke the church played a huge role as a cultural and traditional factor for the support of the people, and subsequently for the collection of Russian lands around Moscow, after the final centralization of the state its role begins to gradually fall. This is particularly noticeable at the turn of the late 17th - early 18th centuries. In this connection, the time of the reign of Peter the Great deserves much attention.
