Family Background Variables and Adjustment on Academic Achievement of Tribal Students in Manipur

Abstract
The present study is an attempt to examine the interactive effects of adjustment and socio-economic background variables, i.e., family income, parental education and occupation on academic achievement of tribal students in tribal dominated area (Ukhrul district, Manipur). The sample comprised of 500 XI standard tribal adolescent students. The present data were collected by using Family Census Sheet and a standardized adjustment inventory for adolescent students developed by the investigator. For academic achievement the last public examination i.e. H.S.L.C. marks were used as the index of academic achievement. The result reveals that no significant interactive effects of adjustment and family income on academic achievement of the tribal respondents of Ukhrul district. It also reveals that a significant effect of father's education on academic achievement of tribal respondents. But adjustment independently and adjustment in combination with father's education has no effect on academic achievement of tribal respondents. Similarly mother's education has also a significant effect on academic achievement. The result further reveals that an insignificant effect of adjustment and parental (father's and mother's) occupation is observed on academic achievement of tribal respondents of Ukhrul district.
