Abstract
Competition and rivalry development trends are considered as socio-economic categories in the historical aspect. It is shown that rivalry is inherent in all social formations; competition is inherent in those formations where commodity-money, market relations are dominant. The competition is characterized by a struggle, the exclusion of other companies from the market, which ultimately leads to monopoly, irrational using of material, labor, intellectual resources outside the business entity under austerity and planned using within the company. It is shown that the intellectualization of labor has expanded the sphere of rivalry, which, unlike competition, is characterized by publicity, comparability of results, the possibility of a repetition of experience. In the rivalry, everyone wins: the planning is spread beyond the business entity; the rational using of resources, the economic efficiency, and the social stability are ensured. In the conditions of the transition of companies to an innovative way of development, the ratio of competition and cooperation changes significantly in favor of human, intellectual capital, the formation of the knowledge economy.
