The Old Age and the Perception of Nursing Home in Elderly Women: A Qualitative Study

Turkish society takes its share of the rapid changes in the world is accepted as an indisputable fact today. Family is undoubtedly one of the most fundamental institution of cultural transmission. When transferring culture, the combination of the three generations of family members and the interaction between them is extremely important. Families become smaller in the modern world. This reduction brings the family functions and the devolution of authority with it. While in the extended family children are not sent to kindergarten, seniors also are not sent to nursing homes. Therefore, the elderly and children care, coexistence and interaction continue in the family. However, the modern family shows more nuclear family property. Family members are working away from home environment. Family members go to work in the morning and turns to home in the evening so they could leave neither children nor elderly at home lonely. While families send their children to school or kindergarten, they are worried about their elderly and elderly start to feel worried about being alone in the home. One of the many alternatives that are submitted to it by modern states are nursing homes. The modern world is aging rapidly. In our study, until that day, elderly has made important contributions to his family and society, but the elderly loses its productivity and agility, therefore we wanted to put forward their perceptions about nursing homes that have been presented to them in the modern world. Our study consists of two main parts. In the first part theoretical information with family and old age will take place in Turkish society. In the second part information obtained by the technique of semi-structured interview conducted on the elderly at the age of 65 and over has been shared. At the end of the study, the perception of the elderly in our research group about nursing home is tried to put forward. Thus, to shed light on the local authorities and the policy enforcement is aimed for the elderly.
