Abstract

Background. The mechanism of hypoxic preconditioning (HP) protection in hepatic ischemia-reperfusion (HIR)remains unclear. The aim of the study was to examine the role of carbon monoxide (CO) in HP protection during HIR in rabbits. Material and methods. 15 adult male rabbits were divided into 2 groups: in the 1st group HIR was performed after the course of HP and hemoxygenase-1 (HO-1) inhibition, in the 2nd group the animals were handled like in the 1st group, but additionally they were given CO donor. The parameters of blood oxygen (BO), lipid peroxidation products and markers of liver damage (ALAT, ASAT) were evaluated. Results. It was found that HO-1 inhibition during the correction of hepatic reperfusion damage by means of HP in rabbits leads to worsened BO and increased oxidative damages of the organ. The use of a CO donor during HO-1 inhibition restores the protective effect of HP, preventing oxidative stress. Conclusion. The mechanism of the protection by means of HP during HIR is to a large extent mediated by gasotransmitter properties of CO.
