Abstract
The sm3+ ions doped sodium zirconium silicate glasses are synthesized by melt quenching technique. The glass samples are characterized by XRD, optical absorption, luminescence, FTIR and Raman spectral techniques. The XRD clearly suggested that the glass samples are fully amorphous in nature. The optical absorption and luminescence spectra are analyzed using Judd?Ofelt parametersfor investigating ligand environment around sm3+ ions and these parameters are following the trend ?2>?4>?6.The variation of band intensities attributes to the energy transfer through cross relaxation between sm3+ ions. From the radiate parameters, it is concluded that 0.4 mol% sm ?doped glasses are efficient laser active materials. The different FT?IR and Raman spectra the assignments of the absorption bands are compiled which shows the gradual evolution of the rigid glassy network beyond Sm 4.
