Abstract

Breast cancer is one of the most common malignancies among women. Currently there is a significant increase in breast cancer survivorship as a consequence of advances in diagnosis and therapy. It is estimated that women with different ethnic and cultural identities and different religions react towards their cancer according to these particular characteristics. As a result, a special care plan is required for survivors. Nurses, as members of the multidisciplinary team, are expected to play a major role in planning and providing the appropriate health care. The aim of the present study is to explore the way breast cancer patients cope with their malignancy according to their cultural background and their personal needs. Women cope with their breast cancer in different ways according to their culture. Religion and other factors, such as ethnicity and race, contribute to the way breast cancer diagnosis is experienced by women. Transcultural nursing which helps to investigate and define patients' cultural and other needs is necessary to create a successful and holistic health care plan for breast cancer survivors.
