Abstract

Gastrointestinal Stromal tumour, previously known as leiomyoma is a non-epithelial tumour of GI Tract. They are the most common sarcoma of GIT but represent only 0.2 percent of all GI tumours. They arise from the interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC), which are components of the intestinal autonomic nervous system that serve as pacemakers regulating intestinal peristalsis. They are mostly asymptomatic but may present with GI bleeding, obstruction, perforation or with metastasis. GIST causing Small bowel volvulus and leading on to small bowel gangrene is an extremely rare occurrence.
