The article presents a brief description of the methodology of probabilistic safety analysis, which is currently used to address safety issues in the operation of nuclear power plants with LWR reactors. Its advantages and disadvantages are considered. It is shown that the problem of risk assessment in conditions of uncertainty of the state of the nuclear power plant takes a dominant place in the general problem of decision making. The algorithm of probabilistic analysis of the safety of nuclear power plants and the stages of its conduct are presented. The problems that should be solved when assessing the safety of nuclear power plants using a probabilistic safety analysis are listed. Causes of significant uncertainties in probabilistic safety analysis are indicated. Additional probabilistic and risk-oriented indicators and criteria for justifying sectoral measures to improve the reliability of accident management at nuclear power plants are presented. Conclusions are drawn that the studies carried out in the work do not provide an opportunity to make good use of existing ones and develop new technical and organizational measures that allow reducing the frequency of occurrence of accidents to the normalized level
