Abstract
Demand of energy has been growing ever since its value for survival and development has been realised. As energy has become a commercial commodity in the global market, its maintenance and regulation becomes crucial. Thus, a regulatory mechanism holds significance for the sustainable growth of the energy market. The study reflects as how on one hand the needs of market has to be catered and on the other, consumer interest has to be protected by the regulator. The study encompasses an overview of the Indian energy sector. The presence of regulator, its role and importance are highlighted in the analysis. The analysis delves into the provisions of law relating to the energy sector and also dissects some of the judicial pronouncements by the Hon'ble Supreme Court of India and Hon'ble Appellate Tribunal for Electricity for conceptualising the subject in holistic light. In addition, this study attempts to give an aerial view of the regulatory mechanism prevalent in the country particularly, for Oil & Gas sector and Power Sector. It also entails an elaborate discussion with regard to issues of consumer protection, consumer law and consumer advocacy in India.
