Abstract
Cohesive elements of the text have become a rich source of investigation for the new grammarians. The topic of cohesion has always appeared to be the most useful constituent of discourse analysis or text linguistics. This work makes a little contribution to this topic, which supports the idea that cohesion is important to help readers' process text and to produce good writing. Most of it is focused on pronominal reference as an important device of cohesion. The simplest form of cohesion is that in which the presupposed element is explicit and is found in the immediately preceding sentence for e.g.: Did the gardener water my flowers? Yes he did. A semantic relation of this kind may be set up within a sentence with the consequence that, when it crosses a sentence boundary, it has the effect of making the two sentences cohere with each other. This is the most usual pattern in the case of reference.
