Abstract
As buildings have gotten taller and narrower, the structural engineer has been increasingly challenged to meet the imposed drift requirements. Undoubtedly, the factor that governs the design of a tall and slender structure most of the times is not the fully stressed state, but the drift drift of the building for wind loading. The acceptable limit(top deflection in tall building) for wind load analysis (according to the IS 875-part3 (1987) is 1/500 of the building height. This study aims to identify the optimum outrigger location in high rise concrete building under horizontal load. Thus, 60-story reinforced concrete building is studied in order to determine the optimum location to construct the outrigger to minimize the drift due to wind load. Buildings with different location of outriggers are analyzed by a structural analysis software ETABS. Results from the analysis shows that the optimum location to construct the outriggers is one third of the height of the building. It has been shown from this study that the structure is optimiz level. Therefore it can be concluded that the optimum location of the structure is between 0.33-0.38 times its height (taken from the bottom of the building).
