Abstract
Among novel drug delivery system ,Buccal mucoadhesive systems have attracted great attention in recent years due to their ability to adhere and remain on the oral mucosa and to release their drug content gradually ,bioadhesion refers to any bond formed between two biological surface or a bond between a biological and a systemic surface. Buccal mucosa is preferred for both systemic and local drug action. The mucosa has a rich blood supply and it relatively permeable. Buccal mucoadhesive films can improve the therapeutic effect of the drug by increasing the absorption of drug through oral mucosa which increases the drug bioavailability by reducing the hepatic first pass effect. In pharmaceutical field natural polymers have gained very much importance. Mucoadhesive polymers are used to improve drug delivery by increasing the dosage forms contact time and residence time with mucous membranes. This review article deals with the novel approaches use in the buccal drug delivery system. Keywords: Buccal delivery,Permeation enhancers ,Mucoadhesive ,Chitosan,Bioadhesive strength.
