Abstract
STUDY OF BACTERIAL PROFILE IN INFECTIVE E N D O C A R D I T I S A T G O V E R N M E N T R A J A J I HOSPITAL,MADURAIABSTRACTOBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to analyse the bacteriological profile and antimicrobial susceptibility pattern in blood culture of patients with infective endocarditis (IE) at Govt.Rajaji hospital (GRH), Madurai during the period between October 2010 and September 2011.MATERIALS AND METHOD Blood culture for bacteria and antimicrobial susceptibility tests were performed for clinically diagnosed cases of infective endocarditis(IE) using standard microbiological protocol.RESULTS During the study period, blood samples were received from 47 patients who were clinically diagnosed as IE and the samples were processed. The blood culture was positive in 36 samples (76.6 percentage) out of 47 samples. The isolates were Coagulase negative Staphylococci(CoNS) in 16 samples (44.4percentage), Staphylococcus aureus in 12(33.3percentage), Streptococci sp in 3(8.3percentage), Pseudomonas aeruginosa in 3 (8.3percentage) and Klebsiella sp. in 2(5.5percentage). Out of 36 isolates,14 isolates were susceptible to first line of drugs such as Ampicillin, Cephalexin, Amikacin, Ciprofloxacin, Erythromycin, Cotrimoxazole. Among the 36 isolates, 34 isolates were susceptible to the second line of drugs such as Gentamicin, Ceftriaxone, Vancomycin, Amoxicillin Clavulanic acid, Piperacillin Tazobactam.CONCLUSION In this current study the most common organism isolated in infective endocarditis was Coagulase negative Staphylococcus(CoNS) and it is more prevalent among adult age group with male predominance. The organisms isolated were more susceptible to second line of drugs
