THE ‘CRY’ AND ‘LAUGH’ IN DIVANÜ LUGATI’T-TÜRK

Abstract
There have been lots of written works for depicting Turkish language, history and culture. Divanü Lûgati’t-Türk which was written at 1073/1074 is one of the most important work of Turkish language, literature and culture. The Divanü Lûgati’t-Türk which is the first source about the Turkish world’s literature, language, cultural, social situation in the 11th century gives us very important and original knowledges for Turcology researching. Dictionaries are among the most important productions of the language they belong to. It is possible to find the reflection of life style and culture and the values that a nation has. Divanü Lûgati’t-Türk that means ‘Turkish Dialects Dictionary’, is a first dictionary of the Turkish by dialects words that is included dialects materials. Historical dictionaries are given importance to determine general Turkish vocabulary. Semantics is an area of science that studies the meanings of a language using the diachronic and synchronic methods. It is well known that there are few studies on semantics in Turkish. So, there are many semantic issues which must be examined synchronicly and diachronicly in Turkish. In Divanü Lûgati’t-Türk beside of laugh, the natural aspect of human being that is the cry is also explained. So, this article, the words of ‘cry’ and ‘laugh’ in vocabulary of Divanü Lûgati’t-Türk will be determined and examined. There is no exact explanation about the meaning and structure of the words. The work that we examined as a source could give an idea about the ‘cry’ and ‘laugh’ words of the written period because of being a glossary.
