Abstract

Decreasing in land availability with increase in population entails that the available resources should be utilised efficiently and effectively. With this as the broad objective, study aims at an integrated approach for preparing Land-use plan for sustainable development of the area in watershed level with inputs from ground water potential map and landforms of the study area. A case study has been carried out in Southpenna watershed, hard rock terrain region in Chickballapur district, Karnataka, India. Ground water potential (GWP) map is generated by considering parameters like drainage lines, geomorphology, Landuse/Landcover, lineament, lithology and slope of the study area. The GWP map were classified under four categories based on water resource potentiality as good, moderate, poor and nil. The higher value of the raster cell corresponds to good ground water potential area and vice versa. Using the above database and the runoff data the location for construction of water harvesting structures are identified and alternatives for landuse pattern was suggested. Existing and recommended land use pattern with the area statistics, leads to a sustainable development of the area.
