Abstract
In the beginning of the 20th century, in most of the big cities in Indonesia,a phenomenoncalledthe urban sprawl emerged. The urban sprawl phenomenon is characterized by risingsettlement growth which has led to the increase in the number of movements between the suburbs and city centers. This condition,in effect, increasestraffic congestion, demand for mobility and air pollution. Research on the subject matter had addressed the link between transportation network and urban planning. But current research that's being conducted is insufficient to reveal the effects of urban sprawl on cost build-upcaused byemission of air pollution. This study examines to what extentan integrated approach to space-transport development strategies is able to increase accessibility, and to reduce air pollution cost caused by housing developments in the suburbs of Surabaya city, Indonesia. This study focusess on the existing modes, i.e. public transportation, private cars and motorcycles. Comparative analysis was conducted to assess the influences of design of monorail system(MRT) and tramline (LRT), and urban structures such as the design of compact zones in a particular region (western region of the city). The results show that MRT and LRT systemsdesign has the effect of reductions in concentration and air pollution costs compared to the existing condition, as well as the design of compact zones. The combination between compact zones in the western regions and the design of MRT + LRT shows a better accessibility for residents in the western regions of the city. Other outcomes arethe reduction of the use of private vehicles.
