Abstract

This stutfy examined characteristics of insulation board manufactured from the mixture of wood wastesfrom Euca!Jptus bybridplantationforest (PF)logging and activatedcharcoal; and the adhesive as used was chitosan derivedfrom the shrimp exoskeleton. PF-logging's wood wastes were reducedin size to chips, then made intopulp usingopen hot soda chemicalprocess at the condition being alkali (NaOH) concentration at 8%, wood to liquorratio 1 :8 (w/v), and maximum cooking temperature 10(/C heldfor 3 hours.Insulation-board mat wasformed using the wetprocessfrom the mixtureof PF logging'swood wastes and activated charcoal at theproportions (w/ w) consecutivefy 100% + 0%,9 7,5% + 2,5%,9 5% + 5%, 9 2,5% + 7,5%, dan 90% + 10%.Prior to matforming, to themixturewereadded 2 kinds of adhesives separatefy (i.e. chitosan and tapioca as the comparison)5 % each.Pbysical and mechanicalproperties of the resulting insulation board with tapioca were better than those with chitosan. The greatertheportion of activated charcoal mixed to the PF-logging'swood wastes, the lower the densityand the strength(lvIOR),the more increased the moisture content, but themore improved the dimensional stability. The insulation board which revealed the most promisingprospectsand could favorabfy meet the]IS specification was the onefrom the mixture proportion of PF-logging'swood wastes and activated charcoalat 97.5% + 2.5%,using tapioca adhesive, and the one from sole!J 100% PF-loggingwastes (withoutactivated charcoal)using chitosan.
