Abstract
AIM To study the demographic profile, maternal and fetal outcome in heart disease complicating pregnancy over a period of two years in our hospital. METHODS Retrospective analysis of case records of heart disease complicating pregnancy from August 2009-August 2011. RESULTS Incidence of heart disease in pregnancy was 0.79. Of a total of 203 cases, 41 cases were newly diagnosed during pregnancy. 82.75 belonged to class V socioeconomic status. 33.5 patients were unbooked. RHD accounted for 69.5 cases with mitral valve involvement in 88.7. Congenital heart disease accounted for 21.7 cases with ASD being most common. Instrumental delivery was done in 54.7 cases. 29.1 were delivered by Caesarean section, all indications being obstetric. Maternal morbidity in the form of aggravation of NYHA class, CCF, arrhythmias, embolic events was seen in 36.95 cases. Maternal mortality rate was 3. Perinatal mortality was 10. CONCLUSION In developed countries, incidence of RHD is declining, but in India, due to poor nutrition, sanitation and inadequate awareness, RHD continues to be a major contributor of maternal and perinatal mortality and morbidity.
