Abstract
The micronucleus and DNA fragmentation assays have been used progressively more to evaluate genotoxicity of many compounds in contaminated aquatic atmosphere. The objective of the current study was to investigate the genotoxic effect of 2-chloro-4-ethylamino-6- isopropylamino-1, 3, 5-triazine in Poecilia sphenops. Fish were exposed to atrazine (2.5, 1.25, 0.83 μg/L) and control also maintained simultaneously for 100days. Erythrocyte and liver cells were sampled on 100 days of exposure for assessment of micronuclei induction in blood erythrocytes and DNA damage using single cell gel electrophoresis assay. Frequency of micronucleated erythrocytes in the peripheral blood cells with an increase in concentration of the atrazine were observed in treated fish. Comet assay revealed a significant DNA damage in treated atrazine. These findings may provide evidence for atrazine induced genotoxicity that could be useful for investigating the effects of toxic blooms on wild fish populations.
