Abstract

A cantilever thin-walled bar with open cross-section is considered in this paper. The thinwalled bar with asymmetric C cross-section loaded by a concentrated force parallel to x – axis at free end is given as an illustrative example. The thin-walled bar is subjected to tension, to bending about two principal cross-section axis and to torsion with restrained warping. Because of that, in an arbitrary point of cross-section contour, normal stresses due to tension, bending and restrained warping including shear stresses that consist of Saint Venant shear component and warping component appear. All geometrical properties of asymmetric C thin-walled cross-section needed for calculation of normal and shear stresses are given in numerical and graphical outputs using the programme package SEKTOR. Distributions of normal and shear stresses over cross-section contour at several sections perpendicular to the x – axis are given. The obtained values are compared with those obtained by means of the finite element method.
