Abstract
Background: Vasthi (Rectal/urogenital route of medicine administration) is one among the most important therapies among the Panchakarma ( five purification therapy). Susrutha Acharya describes Vasthi as effective in disorders due to derangement of Vatha, Pitha, Kapha and Raktha (Humors of the body functional adaptation of five great elements). It is called Ardhachikitsa or half of the whole therapeutic measures. Utharavasthi, a type of Vasthi Karma is specifically indicated for genitourinary diseases and hence in Sthreeroga Chikitsa (Gynaecology), it is of utmost importance. Almost all Acharyas have mentioned Utharavasthi among Vasthikarma, but detailed description is not available. There are discrepancies in classical Ayurveda text books regarding the dosage, type and the method of administration of Utharavasthi.
Aim: The present review is aimed at compiling the data regarding Utharavasthi in females scattered in various text books and also tries to compare the Utharavasthi procedure mentioned in the classical texts with the current practice.
Materials & Methods: A literary survey of Utharavasthi was done on Ayurveda books. The data collected were analysed and under different criteria starting from the procedure till its outcome.
Observations: The discrepancies in the Samhitas regarding this procedure were identified. Utharavasthi when used appropriately is a solution to many genito-urinary problems.
Conclusion: The present article may help the clinician to acquire an idea on conducting the procedure of Utharavasthi. The review
