Abstract
This article is devoted to the role of prosodic features in creating an expressive character of academic public speaking. The object of the research are lectures on scientific and educational themes delivered by English professors of the British Universities. It is believed that very often an academic style lacks for an emotional character. Nevertheless, the examples of academic public speaking, which are analyzed in the article, demonstrate that lecture presentations might be expressive due to particular prosodic characteristics. The article reveals typical intonation patterns, the degree of loudness, a frequent use of terminal tones, tempo and rhythmical organization of the text, types of pauses and other phonetic characteristics, which contribute to creating expressiveness in academic public speaking
