Abstract
A prospective-descriptive study was conducted to characterize the behavior of low birth weight and its predisposing causes, from 2015 to 2016, from the "Omar Ranedo Pubillones" health area of Guantánamo. The universe was constituted by all the women who became pregnant in this period and whose final product of gestation was a newborn underweight at birth. Factors such as: maternal age, adequate body mass index, insufficient weight gain and multiparity had a direct impact on the development of low birth weight infants.
