Abstract
A cross-sectional observational study was conducted to determine the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in the population aged 15 to 74 years of Guantanamo municipality in 2010, which included 1,629 people, selected through complex, cluster and multi - stage sampling. For the definition of metabolic syndrome, the modified NCEP-ATP III criteria were used. To collect the information, the Pan American Version of the National Survey of Risk Factor Surveillance was used. Prevalence by age and sex was determined using estimates of 95% confidence, expressed in percent, using the SPSS program, version 11.5. Metabolic syndrome was more common in women and in the age group 55-64 years. The prevalence obtained does not differ from WHO estimates and it is an indicator that can be used as a baseline for subsequent studies assessing the impact of changes in risk factors. Conclusions and recommendations were issued.
