Abstract
Renal involvement in human immunodeficiency virus infection (HIV) encompasses a spectrum of glomerular diseases, acid-base and electrolyte disorders, Acute Kidney Injury, Chronic Kidney Disease and Highly Active Anti Retro Viral Therapy related nephrotoxicity. After HIV associated collapsing glomerulopathy the immune complex diseases are important glomerular syndromes in HIV(1,2). We report a case of retrovirus positive patient who developed Henoch Schonleins purpura as proven by skin biopsy. Subsequently he progressed to develop an acute nephritic-nephrotic syndrome with renal biopsy showing mesangial proliferative IgA glomerulonephritis, consistent with HSP nephritis. Secondary IgA nephropathy is known to be a part of HIV related immune complex diseases of the kidney (HIVICKS), similar association of HSP nephritis with HIV is unknown. Whether HSP nephritis can occur as part of spectrum of HIVICKs needs further research.
