Abstract
Using literature in teaching English is not something new, yet it can be consider as a revival to old tradition. Students can express themselves, comment and justify through literature in language classroom. By using literary text, motivating discussion will be livelier especially if the topic is interesting for them. This paper examines the use of literature in teaching English for non-English speakers. It examines the historical sequences of using literature in language classrooms, benefits and reasons for using literature as a tool of teaching English as a foreign language, and some techniques that can be used inside the classroom using literature. The techniques and activities that have been mentioned in this paper are suitable for intermediate students.
