Abstract
Multidrug-resistant tuberculosis, a disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains that are resistant at least to rifampicin and isoniazid, entails extended treatment, expensive and toxic regimens, and higher rates of treatment failure and death. Government hospital of thoracic medicineis a DOTS PLUS apex centre in Tamilnadu established in 2009 under programmatic management of drug resistant tuberculosis (PMDT) guidelines to provide universal access to MDRTB diagnosis and treatment. This study is a retrospective analysis of clinical and laboratory findings and outcome of 245 patients hospitalized at our institution from 2009 to 2011 with multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDRTB) diagnosed by means of Culture sensitivity and Line probe assay. Of the 245 patients, 60 were cured (24.5), 46 had completed treatment (18.8), 84 were died (34.3), 13 patients had treatment failure (5.3), 42 were defaulted the treatment (17.1).
