Abstract
Ship recycling is considered to be the best option to dispose of an obsolete ship. It is necessary to identify and rightly assign the responsibilities of the stakeholders in order to carry out recycling of ships in an efficient and sustainable manner. India is one of the leading ship recycling nations in the world and has constituted about 29% of the total number of ships that were recycled globally in 2017. This paper proposes a strategic guidance plan for recycling of ships in the ship recycling yards in India. The plan has been developed in a system approach with the elements consisting of stakeholders in ship recycling in the Indian context. Required interactions between the elements during each stage of ship recycling have been identified and are presented in the plan.
