Abstract

A national program to develop and construct a pebble bed type high temperature reactor namely Reaktor Daya Eksperimental(RDE) is under progress. One of the main components of the RDE is the steam generator which determines the overall performance of RDE. In current phase, helical and straight tube type heat exchanger is under consideration to be the final design of the RDE steam generator. The purpose of this work is to design a steam generator for RDE which based on a straight tube heat exchanger. The requirement which investigated in this work is the heat transfer and mechanical performance of the steam generator. For the mechanical performance, the design should have a minimum flow induced vibration which might cause damage to the heat exchanger tube. The design study is performing mainly using a CC-THERM CHEMCAD software. Heat transfer and vibrational analysis resulted in an optimized design of a 1-1 shell and tube, 16 mm OD tube, 2 mm thickness, 1079 number of tubes, 1680 mm shell ID, 5200 mm tube length and NTIW baffle type. The above optimized design of straight tube design might consider being ineffective in sized compare to the helical tube type, this comparison will be our next study.
