Abstract

A student's excellence is not measured solely on academic performance, but it is also evaluated through their involvement in various co-curriculum activities that can build their soft skills. The aim of this research is to study the factors that motivate students to become involved in volunteer activities. A total of 101 respondents, comprising of students from the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities (FSSK) and the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) at UKM were involved in this study. The questionnaire and library review method was used. The study has found that 79.6% respondents were involved in volunteer activities, with a frequency of around 1 to 3 times during the duration of their study. The main factor motivating their involvement is that they are keen on gaining new experiences. A total of 20.6% of the respondents who have not gotten involved in this activity state that they do not have the free time and would prefer to focus on their studies. As a conclusion, volunteer activities are among the activities that are well received by students at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, as well as the Faculty of Science and Technology because they have an active lifestyle and like to explore new experiences which indirectly enhance their soft skills.
