Importance of Personality Towards Accounting Profession: An Application in Vocational School Students

Abstract

In this study, the relationship between the personality traits and the accounting profession tendencies of the students studying at the Bartın University Vocational School, Business Management and Accounting programs was examined. For this purpose, the survey was implemented to 139 students who study at these programs. Five Factor Personality Scale was used in order to determine personal features and personality dimensions of the students. As a result of the survey, individual points were found for each student according to 5 factors, and each student's dominant personality was identified. To determine whether there was a meaningful relationship between the personality traits of the students and the accounting profession orientations, Chi Square Test and T Test were conducted. Analysis have revealed that the gender, the level of success and the level of interest in accounting courses are significant factors at orientation to the accounting profession. Students' program, general grade averages and their horoscope have no significant effect on the orientation of the accounting profession. Moreover, that was determined Conscientiousness personality dimension and Emotional Stability personality dimension were significantly effective on orientation to accounting profession.
