SUBJECTION OF PEOPLE WITH MENTAL DISORDERS TO DOMESTIC VIOLENCE DEPENDING ON GENDER IDENTITY

Abstract
Aim to study of subjection of people with mental disorders to domestic violence in the course of the lifetime depending on their gender identity. Materials and Methods. Clinical-psychopathological examination was carried out in a group of 138 ambulatory and resident patients of the regional psychiatric hospital having no symptoms of acute psychosis or dementia. They were also interviewed with the help of a questionnaire in order to acquire information regarding the following aspects: sociodemographic, anamnestic, social and labor. Results. The revealed level of occurrence of domestic violence is two times higher and almost three times higher for some types of aggression as compared to the rate previously established for mentally sane population and people with mental disorders; the rate of subjection of people with mental disorders to domestic violence was equal for the both genders. Conclusions. It is necessary to develop corresponding treatment and rehabilitation programs to deal with the wide spread occurrence of domestic violence against mentally disturbed people; mentally disturbed men and women are equally subjected to most types of intrafamilial aggression which comes into collision with the generally accepted view of family aggression as almost exclusively a female issue.
