Abstract

Each mufassir has been influenced by the political, social and cultural environment of his time. In addition to this, when his knowledge, ideology, priorities and indispensables for his system of thought are also taken into consideration, no doubt, the interpretations that he puts forth will not be independent of these effects. This situation has led to the emergence of interpretations of the Qur'anic verses that are contrary to the historical context of verses. In accordance with the new political environment that emerged in the post-colonial period of Indian subcontinent, Maududi also reflected the discourse he adopted in the Qur'anic interpretation. One of the reflections of his discourse is about his interpretation of the seventy-sixth verse of Surah Yûsuf. Maududi interprets this expression in the context of his own political and ideological views; but in a way that is contradictory to the narratives from the first addressees and to the general acceptance. Moreover, he criticizes this prevalent interpretation that does not confirm his own view, in terms of language rules. However, it is not possible to encounter any arguments that support his explanation in the books of tafseer bi al-riwaya and in the early tafseer sources. One of the most important factors, that led Maududi to interpret in this way, can be considered as a reflexive attitude of the period he belongs to. This case is very important to show how effective and decisive the human factors are in the Qur'anic interpretation. In this study, first of all, the political environment in which Maududi lived and his political views will be mentioned. Then, the meaning of the questioned verse will be determined and the meaning-interpretation framework of the verse will be detected by revealing how the first addressees interpreted it. In the next stage, the reasons for Maududi‘s judgmental interpretation of the passage by criticizing and ignoring these numerous narratives, will be tried to determined.
