A SURVEY REPORT ON CYBERCRIME AWARENESS AMONG GRADUATE AND POSTGRADUATE STUDENTS OF GOVERNMENT INSTITUTIONS IN CHICKMAGALURU, KARNATAKA, INDIA AND A SUBSEQUENT EFFORT TO EDUCATE THEM THROUGH A SEMINAR

Abstract

The larger picture of cybercrime became globally noticeable after 2007 post which parents, policymakers and academicians have drawn attention towards spreading knowledge of internet safety among children, adolescents and youth. Cybercrime uses computers and mobiles as tools. The alarming growth rate in use of these devices among youth raises concern, because they unknowingly commit crime or get victimized. This study aims at surveying with use of questionnaire and analyzing the results, to understand level of knowledge about cybercrime and cyber security among the Post Graduate and Under Graduate students of Government institutions. The questionnaire mainly covered three aspects like 1) Basic purpose of using internet and related aspects 2) Level of understanding about cybercrime and 3) Type of education needed on cyber security and cybercrime. Students (250 in number) with age group between 17-21 years were randomly picked for the survey. 95% of students use mobile for internet surfing, 29.6% of them use it for downloading pictures/video and 36.6 % use it for music. There are 77.5 % who use internet for Social Networking. On an average 50% and more of them have no ideas about the types of cybercrime, 90% of them wanted to learn about it and 60% of them wanted to learn through seminar. Hence a seminar was conducted titled “CYBER CRIME- Latest trends and challenges - its detection, investigation and conviction (Cyber legal challenges)” on 17th Oct 2018 for the college students. Out of 185 participants, 120 gave feedback.
