Abstract

Based on archival and printed sources the history and current state of documents from the personal collection of Tymofi i Dmytrovych Florynskyi, Slavic philology, history and Вуzаntоlоgу scientist, professor and dean of the History and Philology Faculty of St. Volodymyr University, (1854-1919) have been investigated. The quantitative and thematic composition of the scientist’s personal library is analyzed; the stages of its creation and sources of replenishment are traced. The section of periodicals, particularly magazines, has been studied in detail; the value of some of them lies primarily in the fact that they have T. D. Florynskyi’s notes on bindings of the publications or title sheets. In particular, these include such editions as “Český Časopis of Historický”, “Vestnik Kral.Ceske of spolecnosti nauk”, “Наставник. Лист професорскога Друштва”, “Rječnik of hrvatskoga ili srpskoga jezika”, “Nastavni Vjesnik casopis za srednje škole”, “Из Гласа српске of Кральевске академиjе”, and some others. In the process of studying the scientist’s book collection the thematic orientation of the library is clarifi ed. It was revealed that the library of the scientist mainly corresponded to his scientifi c interests. The library can be conditionally divided into the following thematic parts: the history of the southern and western Slavs (Bulgarians, Serbs, Poles and others); the history of Slavic literatures; Slavic linguistics; Slavic folklore and ethnography; Slavic paleography. Also, thanks to the study of archival materials, records of T. D. Florynskyi, which contain valuable information about when and from which private persons books in foreign languages were handed to him, were revealed. The study based on the personal correspondence of Vira Ivanivna Florynska, the scientist’s widow, shows the process of books transferring by T. D. Florynskyi to the National Library of Ukraine.
