Abstract

The paper focuses on some aspects of translating literary texts from English into Russian considering their lexical and stylistic peculiarities. The study is based on two translations of the fragments from the book “Northern Lights” by Philip Pullman. The first one was made by O. Novitskaya, the second – by V. Golyshev and V. Babkov, the translators of the publishing house ROSMAN. The paper presents the results of translation analysis of both variants from the point of view of their appropriateness in conveying the opus‟ essence, age rating, style and genre. The analysis touches upon such lexical and stylistic problems as word formation, the use of various layers of lexis, and the use of stylistic means aimed at enhancing emotion. Every example is introduced as a set including an extract from the original book and two variants of its translation; each example illustrates a specific linguistic or stylistic peculiarity of the book for young adults, which may be difficult to transmit in translation. In case both variants of translation do not appear appropriate, the researchers provide an alternative variant, solving, in their opinion, a definite translation problem. Some conclusions concerning the most effective translation strategies to be used in translating fantasy fiction targeted at young adults are made.
