ON THE ADULT BILINGUAL LANGUAGE PERSONALITY (SUBORDINATE TYPE) THESAURUS PECULIARITIES

Abstract

The purpose of the study is to analyze the thesaurus of adult bilingual foreign language (English) learners (advanced level). The bilingual's thesaurus is viewed (according to Yu.N. Karaulov) as a system of knowledge reflecting the peculiarities of the national cultural as well as spiritual and moral values relevant for the speaker of both languages and penetrating all levels of the bilingual's language personality structure (verbal semantic, linguo-cognitive and motivational). The language personality is forced to revise the holism of its knowledge system when it discovers phenomena and facts of reality that are not correlated with the usual nodal elements and does not find system-structural schemes suitable for embedding new elements into its thesaurus. Before this system (linguistic personality's thesaurus) is restructured without damage to its entirety, a kind of secondary thesaurus arises in its structure. The key elements of this secondary thesaurus often conflict with the corresponding elements of the main system-structural organization. Аll of it leads to a deformation of the linguistic personality's thesaurus. The deformation is inevitable but surmountable. The purpose of the study is to analyze the features of the thesaurus deformation of an adult bilingual personality and the conditions for the formation of a harmonious bilingual knowledge system. This system is considered to be the complex thesaurus formed by the primary (Russian-speaking) language personality thesaurus and secondary (foreign-language) one, both conventionally distinguished in its structure. The relevance of the analysis of the thesaurus extension mechanisms for the subordinate bilingualism type of language personality in English teaching (advanced level) is determined by the need for constant individual self-improvement, which is realized as continuing education throughout life, including the one within the frame of the existing educational system. The article presents a description of the results of the overt observation of Russian-speaking English teachers (all levels of education – comprehensive, secondary vocational and higher vocational) within one academic year in the context of an advanced English course with a native anglophone mentor. It is recommended to use game elements that contrast with the usual analytic-rational technology of thesaurus expansion to overcome the possible consequences of thesaurus deformation and to improve the bilingual's language competence. Thus, the inevitable metalanguage reflection is a way of improving the bilingual's language competence, allowing adult Russian-English bilinguals (subordinate bilingual type) to overcome the inevitable consequences of the worldview mismatch and to form deep-semantic level structures that are not the subject to language and cultural interference. The necessity of using the right hemisphere technologies in adult bilingual foreign language teaching (advanced level) in forming a harmonious bilingual thesaurus is underlined.
